Every 2 seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood and of the 37% of eligible blood donors, less than 5% donate blood. There is a great need in the Chicagoland area especially, with blood supply levels falling short. LifeSource, Chicagoland’s Blood Center, is doing something about that by distributing a half million blood products each year to 90% of local area hospitals and trauma centers to meet the 547,000 donations required annually.
Recently, the Roscoe Chicago Uniform and Mat Company held our annual blood drive at our facility in the Lawndale area. We had 28 eligible donors donate a collective 28 pints of blood. The one pint of blood given during blood donation can save up to three lives; therefore the uniform rental company helped save 84 lives. In our long history of blood donations, Roscoe has donated over 1,000 pints of blood. Even Dracula would be jealous of those numbers.
The mat rental company has always been dedicated to giving back to the community and this is another way we can show our support. Blood drives hosted by companies, schools, places of worship and civic organizations supply roughly half of all blood donations across the United States and the mat company is proud to be a part of that. Considering that different patients need different amounts of blood:
- Auto accidents: 4-40 pints of blood
- Liver transplant: 20 pints of blood, 10 units of platelets, 20 unites of plasma
- Bone marrow transplant: up to 1-2 pints of blood per week and 6-8 units of platelets daily for 4-6 weeks
- Cancer: up to 2-6 pints of blood, 6-8 units of platelets daily for 2-4 weeks
The mat company hosted the drive through LifeSource and they made it simple and easy. LifeSource provided all the materials including posters, staff, equipment, snacks and beverages, while Roscoe arranged a room with tables and chairs and a contact person.
