At Roscoe, safety is part of everything we do, from the work uniforms we provide to our customers, to the practices we follow in our own facilities. It’s built into our culture.
So when we had the opportunity to take our safety program up to an even higher level, we were all in in.
As a result, Roscoe is now one of only 34 companies in Illinois to have received the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Safety & Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) certification, a voluntary program designed to improve workplace safety practices by providing free guidance from OSHA safety consultants and honoring those companies that take the extra step of undergoing a thorough evaluation of their safety practices.
“A Model of Worksite Safety and Health”
The designation reflects Roscoe’s longstanding commitment to safety in all of our practices and is an honor that, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, singles us out as “a model for worksite safety and health.”
The five-month process, which we began last November, included an on-site evaluation by OSHA safety consultants, testing of air quality and noise levels, a list of recommended improvements and a follow-up inspection.
Among other measures undertaken at the consultant’s recommendations, Roscoe sent its maintenance team through an electrical safety course and implemented pre-shift stretching to to prevent injuries, Human Resources Leader Theresa Faulkner said.
The designation is one more way in which Roscoe can demonstrate to customers how seriously the company takes safety, she added.
Safety is Not Just a Certificate on the Wall
At Roscoe, safety is a year-round process of training, awareness and culture. Among our ongoing efforts, we have established the following practices:
- Annual noise testing
- Monthly safety training for all Roscoe employees
- Additional training for home and on-the-job safety during National Safety Month each June
- Pre-shift stretching for injury prevention
- Display of safety posters
With more than 1.2 million small businesses in Illinois, and fewer than three dozen that have been SHARP certified, the SHARP designation puts us in elite company. But it’s not the kind of thing we take for granted. Continuous improvement is also part of our culture here at Roscoe, where our success is built around the idea that we can always do better, for our customers, for our employees and for our community.
