We came, we ate, we conquered the marble run and then we ate some more, at the always delicious, always entertaining Roscoe annual family picnic at National Grove South on a perfect Chicago summer day.
Roscoe children of all ages welcomed our new clown “Strawberri” at the June 23 event. Strawberri’s face painting and balloon making skills were in high demand.
“She had a very long line, from the time she arrived to the time she left,” said Human Resources Team Leader Theresa Faulkner. “Everyone loved her.”
Team Work & Taquitos
We also introduced a tricky new team-building exercise at this year’s event, with the addition of the highly competitive marble game in which six-person teams competed to get a marble through three pieces of track into a cup. It was an exercise in cooperation and patience, but like all of our games, it was well rewarded.
Game winners went home with gift cards from Best Buy, Target and Amazon. We raffled off a big screen television, a home sound bar, a collection of bicycles and other prizes. The biggest winners, as usual, were our appetites: With team members Jesse Espinosa and LeRoy Johnson taking up their usual spots behind the grill, along with help from newcomer Mike Rasinski, we feasted on barbecue chicken, hot dogs, hamburgers and a wide assortment of side dishes and entrees contributed by other team members. The always popular taquitos disappeared quickly. Desserts included brownies, cupcakes, cookies and an assortment of paletas from Paleteria Poncho.
When we weren’t eating, we were playing games, from bingo to “red light, green light,” to “hot potato” and more.
All in all, it was a lovely day and we enjoyed getting to spend time with each other’s friends and family members. Even so, we’re always looking for ways to make it better and we continued our tradition of soliciting ideas for next year’s event.
Among the suggestions we have received so far: adding steak and lobster to the menu.
Also: make it longer. It is always over too soon.
Our picnic is always successful because of partnerships with vendors who help support our event with donations of gift cards and other contributions.
