As a leading provider of Chicago uniforms, it’s important to Roscoe to educate our customers on the changing landscape of worker safety.
The safety of your workforce is a top priority, and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA) is making sure to protect workers by providing guidance in the final rule of ANSI/ISEA 107-2004.
This rule states that all workers on or near the roadway right-of-way must wear High-Visibility safety apparel that meets performance Class 2 or Class 3.
What constitutes a garment as high-visibility? High-Visibility safety apparel has three components: background material, retro-reflective material (bands) and combined-performance material (a combination of retro-reflective and fluorescent material that may separate the two). The color of the background material and the combined-performance material can either be fluorescent yellow-green or fluorescent orange-red. Combined performance material is considered part of the background for purposes of total area required. Retro-reflective material reflects light back to the source when light shines on it.
The different levels of high-visibility garments depends on the risks and the environment of the worker. Class 1 Garments meet the minimum requirements for retro-reflective and background materials because conditions permit workers full and undivided attention to approaching traffic, speeds are low (less than 25 mph), backgrounds are not complex and pedestrian workers are separated from traffic. Class 2 is intended for greater visibility, while Class 3 provide the greatest level of visibility due to an increased level of the conditions specified in Class 1.
Enhanced visibility garments do not meet ANSI standards, but still serve to protect and improve the visibility of the worker. Therefore, if the job does not require they wearhigh-visibility garments, think about reducing any additional hazards by providing enhanced visibility clothing.
Workers who might benefit from enhanced visibilityclothing include truck drivers, delivery people, dock personnel and workers in facilities where forklift traffic is prevalent. Workers required to wear high-visibility garments include construction, maintenance, utility, emergency responders, airport ramp personnel and others who work on or near roadways.
